Genuine GoodYear Welt Construction

J.C. Cole shoes are Goodyear Welted.  The sturdiest available 360º leather storm welts are stitched to both the upper pattern and insole rib of the shoe. This is the strongest construction method known for shoes that provides all day comfort, support, and wear.

J.C. Cole Michail Last

Years in the making, the Michail Last is an exclusive lastmaker design created for our J.C. Cole shoes.  After many wear testings and tweakings, we believe that this last has acquired the most comprehensive fitting qualities required for the active foot. Shoes on this last run True To Size, so we recommend that you order your typical dress shoe size.

Each upper pattern has undergone the highest scrutiny for quality and balance. J.C. Cole shoes are hand rubbed and burnished, and each pair has been matched for consistency in appearance and wear.  The distinctive handsewn Northern Cross bar tacking adds strength at points of stress.

JC Cole Dundee

JC Cole DundeeThe J.C. Cole Dundee is J.C. Cole’s version of a bench-made dress blucher. It’s plain-toe design makes it extremely versatile. The Dundee was inspired by the timeless English-Scottish brogues of both the Northampton, England and Galway, Scotland regions.

JC Cole Galway

JC Cole Galway

The J.C. Cole Galway is a longwing dress blucher. Like the Dundee, the Galway is inspired by classic English-Scottish brogues.  Special dies create both the meticulous pinking (saw toothed edges) and the crisp, clean diameters of the perfing (graduated pattern holes).

Premium select Italian calfskin leather. Hand-finished.

Smooth American cow leather lines the full shoe.

Flexible, full-grain, veg-tanned, American leather insoles. These offer the highest consistency for “moulding” – when natural heat and moisture from the wearer’s foot imprints an individual foundation within the insoles.

Precision milled leather midsoles are attached to the outsole to ensure a consistent, solid base.

Steel Shank

A hardened steel shank is placed with the footbed, encased in a layer of natural cork.  This helps to provide consistent foot support, temperature regularion, and underfoot cushion.

Double oak bend leather outsoles are repairable and offer exceptional durability and stability. Great for city wear.

A repairable three-piece dovetail heel, commonly referred to as a McAfee heel, consists of stacked leather and a rubber insert for longer wear.

J.C. Cole shoes are sold exclusively in the USA at TheShoeMart and TheShoeMart.com.

Best Shoes for College – Men

Entering college often signifies a new stage in your life–and the perfect time to update your wardrobe.  As you grow and learn, your style should also reflect that growth.  Plus, moving from class to class and around campus means you’re spending a lot of time on your feet.  We’ve made a list of some of our favorite shoes for college and university life below.

Chukka / Desert Boots

Add a little class to your casual look. Chukka and Desert boots are laid back and comfortable, but look much nicer than your tennis shoes.  A traditional chukka boot has a crepe sole and two eyelets, but plenty of variations exist. Try a pair from Clarks, Timberland, or Johnston & Murphy.

Dress Shoes

Bruno Magli Shoes

Whatever your price range, it’s important to have a well-maintained pair of dress shoes.  These will come in handy for presentations, interviews, scholarship banquets, and other formal events. A go-to staple is a plain-toe, black balmoral (click here to learn about the difference between a blucher and a balmoral/oxford), which will work at almost every formal event.  A straight tip (cap toe) shoe is a slightly less formal option that is still commonly accepted, but brogues and wing designs are seen as informal. If you already have a staple formal pair, you can feel free to experiment with bluchers, brogues, toe styles and leathers. Try a pair from Johnston & Murphy, Florsheim, Cole Haan, or Bruno Magli.

New Balance Shoes

From division teams to sports clubs to recreation centers to hiking trips, there are plenty of ways to stay active in college. Whether you’re running, training, lifting, or  we have you covered with athletic shoes from New Balance, Reebok CrossFit, Inov-8, Merrell,Vibram FiveFingers, Ecco and more!

Waterproof / Hiking

Merrell Moab Hiking Shoes

Being out on your own in a new place may be a little scary, but it also comes with plenty of opportunities for new experiences. Always be ready for whatever adventure comes your way–or just for inclement weather with hiking shoes and waterproof boots from MerrellTimberland, and Kamik.

Timberland SandalsNaot Sandals

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have shoes for warm weather.  Depending on where you attend college (and if your dorm room has a/c), the first and last few months of your first year can get really hot. Remember that if you’re walking between classes, you’ll need more support. Save your flimsy flip flops for the shower–sandals from Vionic, Olukai, Timberland, Naot, Chaco, and Sperry Topsider are comfortable enough for all-day wear.

I Can See It In Your Eyes – Blucher vs. Bal

If you browse the men’s shoes on our site, you’ll see terms like “Blucher”, “Oxford”, “Derby”, and “Balmoral”.  What do these terms mean?

Alden Men's Plain Toe Blucher

  •  Referred to as a “Derby” in the UK
  •  Open lacing system, in which eyelets sit on flaps stitched directly to the outside of the shoe, unrestrained.
  • Seen as less formal than Balmorals. There is some debate as to whether or not Bluchers are appropriate with a suit, but many Americans will agree that a Blucher is formal enough for business attire

Alden Men's Cap Toe Bal Oxford Shell Cordovan

  • Referred to as an  “Oxford” in the UK
  • Closed Lacing system, Eyelet flaps are stitched over and across the vamp.
  • Because of its sleeker silhouette, Balmorals are seen as dressier shoes and are generally appropriate for various formal occasions.

Many retailers and even shoe manufacturers use the terms lightly or interchangeably.  It is not common to find a blucher shoe labeled “oxford” or to find more than one term in the shoe description.  This is why it is important to be able to distinguish between the two yourself.  It may be confusing at first, but after a while you’ll be able to spot the difference without thinking about it.

Here’s how to tell the difference: look for the attachment of the eyelet flaps. If they are anchored into the shoe with stitching, you’re looking at a Balmoral. If they are detached at the bottom or an upside-down V shape is formed at the bottom of the lacing system, you’ve got a pair of Bluchers on your hands.
