Timberland Summer Style

Timberland is famous for their yellow boots–but did you know that they also make summer sandal styles?  The premium leather sandals in their Earthkeepers collection are even environmentally-friendly, using at least 50% leather tanned in a facility rated Silver or higher in a third-party environmental audit that measures energy use, waste production, and water treatment.  Here’s a little bit more about some of our favorite styles…

The Women’s Earthkeepers Harborview Thong adds an extra strap to a classic silhouette for a bit more sophistication. The cushioned midsole and durable outsole will put your other flip-flops to shame.

The Women’s Earthkeepers Haborview Thong Ankle Strap adds even more elegant style to your sandal. We love that this one comes in Beet Red.

The Women’s Earthkeepers Tilden Double Strap sandal comes in a range of colors that can appeal to everyone, from basic black to versatile navy to this bright, unique Apricot Buff Gluvy color. The hexagonal hardwear adds a fun touch of Timberland workboot style, while the 3.5 inch heel keeps it feminine. Anti-fatigue technology makes these an easy-to-wear choice.

The Timberland Men’s Earthkeepers Altamont 2.0 Open-Toe Fisherman is a rugged summer look perfect for summer days spent by the boardwalk or on the boat.

Whether you are  packing for a weekend getaway or just heading for some downtime at the local park, the Timberland Men’s Earthkeepers Altamont 2.0 Slide sandal is a definite go-to choice.

The Timberland Men’s Earthkeepers Altamont 2.0 Flip‘s footbed has a layer of memory foam to help make this one of the most comfortable thong style sandals you will ever wear. The environmentally-friendly lug outsole offers durability and traction, wherever your travels take you.

We are happy to offer Timberland shoes at TheShoeMart.  Timberland started with the classic 6 Inch Yellow Boot, but their successful expansion into other durable, comfortable footwear and sustainable technologies offers plenty of options!

Best Shoes for College – Men

Entering college often signifies a new stage in your life–and the perfect time to update your wardrobe.  As you grow and learn, your style should also reflect that growth.  Plus, moving from class to class and around campus means you’re spending a lot of time on your feet.  We’ve made a list of some of our favorite shoes for college and university life below.

Chukka / Desert Boots

Add a little class to your casual look. Chukka and Desert boots are laid back and comfortable, but look much nicer than your tennis shoes.  A traditional chukka boot has a crepe sole and two eyelets, but plenty of variations exist. Try a pair from Clarks, Timberland, or Johnston & Murphy.

Dress Shoes

Bruno Magli Shoes

Whatever your price range, it’s important to have a well-maintained pair of dress shoes.  These will come in handy for presentations, interviews, scholarship banquets, and other formal events. A go-to staple is a plain-toe, black balmoral (click here to learn about the difference between a blucher and a balmoral/oxford), which will work at almost every formal event.  A straight tip (cap toe) shoe is a slightly less formal option that is still commonly accepted, but brogues and wing designs are seen as informal. If you already have a staple formal pair, you can feel free to experiment with bluchers, brogues, toe styles and leathers. Try a pair from Johnston & Murphy, Florsheim, Cole Haan, or Bruno Magli.

New Balance Shoes

From division teams to sports clubs to recreation centers to hiking trips, there are plenty of ways to stay active in college. Whether you’re running, training, lifting, or  we have you covered with athletic shoes from New Balance, Reebok CrossFit, Inov-8, Merrell,Vibram FiveFingers, Ecco and more!

Waterproof / Hiking

Merrell Moab Hiking Shoes

Being out on your own in a new place may be a little scary, but it also comes with plenty of opportunities for new experiences. Always be ready for whatever adventure comes your way–or just for inclement weather with hiking shoes and waterproof boots from MerrellTimberland, and Kamik.

Timberland SandalsNaot Sandals

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have shoes for warm weather.  Depending on where you attend college (and if your dorm room has a/c), the first and last few months of your first year can get really hot. Remember that if you’re walking between classes, you’ll need more support. Save your flimsy flip flops for the shower–sandals from Vionic, Olukai, Timberland, Naot, Chaco, and Sperry Topsider are comfortable enough for all-day wear.

Times are changing, and now you are more likely to receive an interview for a job or internship while still in college.  While flats are acceptable in interviews, closed-toe dress heels are more traditional.  Comfortable heels not only feel great, but also make you look more practical.  Try a pair from Rockport, SoftSpots, or Cole Haan (45 or 65 series for lower heel height).

 Supportive Sandals

Slip-on Casual

Get Happy… Feet!

You rely on them every day, and they take you everywhere you need to go. Your feet do a lot for you… so what can you do for them in return?

1.  Learn More About Them!

Foot ailments don’t just occur in athletes.  According to the APMA’s 2010 survey, most Americans have experienced pain or problems with their feet. Foot pain can interfere with many of your favorite activities.  Get to know your feet and get advice on how to care for them from the APMA’s website and by tuning in to some of our tips and tricks!

2.  Put them up!

The phrase “Put your feet up” exists as an idiom for a reason! Give your feet some much needed R & R.  Reduce feet and ankle swelling by elevating your legs above your heart while sitting or lying down.

3. Rub them down!

Foot massages feel great and release all that unwanted tension. Your feet will appreciate a good rub-down, and so will the rest of your body! Benefits of massage include better circulation! If you want to learn to massage your own feet, you can start by watching this video. Use lotion, especially during cold, dry months to moisturize!

4.  Work Them Out!

Your feet need exercise, too! Pick up marbles or other small items with your toes, walk as if you were on a tight rope, and rotate your ankles slowly.  Avoid toe cramps by raising, pointing, and curling toes. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times.  Search Pinterest for more foot exercises!

5.  Get a Proper Fit!

Many foot problems are caused or made worse by ill-fitting shoes. A properly fit shoe can make all the difference when it comes to conditions like hammer toe, gout, bunions, or swollen feet. A properly-fit shoe will not only help reduce pain but can also prevent many foot conditions from happening. Get fitted at your local store or come see us in Norwalk, CT and we will be happy to assist you!

Check back next week for more about good foot hygiene!

Liz keeps forgetting exactly how cold 40 degree weather is, until she goes outside and her toes nearly freeze off. She has decided to take action, so she spent some time creating a Pinterest board with tricks, tips, DIY projects, and slippers to keep your feet nice and cozy. Check it out here.

Meanwhile, you can learn about some of the Men’s and Women’s slippers that we carry below, hopefully while sipping on hot chocolate and sitting by a fire.

For Women:

Minnetonka offers many trendy styles of moccasins using only the finest suede, leathers, and pile. Stylish enough to wear out, and comfortable enough to wear around the house all day long, you will never have to compromise. And with so many styles, from simple tie and fringe to more intricate beaded or feathered Mocs, you’ll find the one for you.

Old Friend

Old Friend offers sheepskin slippers that are covered with a durable soft-napped suede leather.  Because the suede material beads off moisture and the rubber soles are constructed for both indoor and outdoor use, most styles of slippers can be worn in dewy grass or on rainy days–perfect for those days when the newspaper doesn’t quite reach the doorstep. Old Friend carries many styles of slipper, from Moc to Mule, and whether they are pink or tan, you’ll find a pair to bring a smile to your face. Many of their styles also come in wide, extra wide, or are adjustable for hard-to-fit feet.

For Men:

UGG Austrailia sets the standard for premium sheepskin products. Using only Grade-A Twinface sheepskin in their popular Classic boots, UGG has made a name for themselves in quality and comfort. This translates into their line of slippers as well, with genuine sheepskin lining, suede, full-grained leather, molded rubber, and leather lace detailing. Available in sizes up to 18, UGG slippers won’t let you down.

Minnetonka’s carries suede, sheepskin, and moose-hide slippers and moccasins with a more masculine touch (and a lot less beading). Many of their styles come in wide widths and XL sizes (14-16). Rawhide laces and rubber soles make styles durable and fashionable to wear right out of the house.
